Kolm aastat tagasi tuli esimene spam kiri, milles nõuti inimeselt bitcoini maksmist või ähvardati avalikustada piinlik video. Maksa nüüd, sest seade on häkitud.
Tegemist on hirmutamisega, mingit seadme häkkimist või kellegi võõra ligipääsu inimese andmetele ei olnud. See kasutab ära inimese psühholoogiat, et äkki ta oligi seadme videokaamera nägemisalas ja võis jääda salaja salvestatud videole. Juba 2016. aastal presidendi ametist lahkunud Toomas Hendrik Ilves TEIPIS KINNI ARVUTI VIDEOKAAMERA. Sama soovitus kehtib ka järgnevatel aastatel, katke kaamera kinni.
Neile, kelle arvuti küljes oli kaamera ja nad ei tea, kas keegi häkkis seda märkamatu ligipääsuga, siis eeldage, et seda ei ole juhtunud. Isegi kui tegite midagi, mille avalikuks tulek tundub piinlik, siis selle juhtumisel saate pöörduda politseisse väljapressimise alusel. Selleks läheb ka häbistavate andmete avaldamise ähvardus.
Need inglise- ja venekeelsed kirjad on masspostitatud ja kirjade saatjatel pole mingit aimu, kellele nad kirjutavad. Veelgi vähem, millist seadet kasutate, sest kirjades pole täpsustatud, kas häkiti lauaarvuti, sülearvuti, tahvelarvuti või nutitelefon. Kõigi nende küljes võib olla kaamera aga tarkvarad on väga erinevad.

Erinevus varasemate kirjadega on nüüd @gmail.com aadressile vastamise võimalus. Varem seda ei olnud kirjades aga see ei tähenda vastuse saamist ega seda, et kirja saatja on selle aadressi kasutaja.
Eelmiste aastate näitel saadakse siiski 3 kuni 5 bitcoini väärtuses ülekandeid aga täpsemat analüüsi ei ole tehtud, kas rohkem makstakse väiksema(1500 dollarit) või suurema (3000 dollarit) nõudega.
